Homeopathy and Diabetes

November is diabetes awareness month, and today is World Diabetes Day.

We all know someone with diabetes, but do we really understand what diabetes is?  Most of us are familiar with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.  However, there are actually many more types of diabetes[1] including gestational diabetes, juvenile diabetes, diabetes LADA and diabetes MODY to name a few.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin at all, which leads to fluctuations in blood sugar levels.  Symptoms can develop quite quickly in children and young people and may take some months to fully develop in adults.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas doesn’t produce sufficient insulin to maintain a normal blood sugar level or when the body cannot use the insulin that is produced.  We are all familiar with the dangers of a nutrient-poor diet and one of these is Type 2 diabetes.  Other factors that come in to play are weight, age and genetics.

Diet is one of the main methods of controlling and maintaining a healthy blood sugar level along with medications such as insulin injections and metformin.  Eating regular, nutritionally balanced meals throughout the day can help to maintain a healthy level.  Many diabetes charities carry sound nutritional advice on the websites (https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food/eating-with-diabetes/10-ways-to-eat-well-with-diabetes).

How can homeopathy assist in managing the symptoms of diabetes?  In a controlled environment, homeopathy in addition to conventional treatment was shown to result in better glycaemic control when compared to conventional treatment alone[2].

This is achieved by administering a person’s constitutional remedy.  This entails finding the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms that you are experiencing, physically, mentally and emotionally.  In order to do this, your homeopath will spend some time, normally 60-90 minutes meeting with you.  You will chat about you, your symptoms as you experience them, medical history and family medical history.

Follow up appointments are important as they allow the homeopath to assess your progress and determine the next steps in your treatment.  There is no set time frame within which you will see drastic changes.  Each person is a unique individual and as such will respond at their own pace to the remedy as prescribed.

Why not try homeopathy as a means of helping you to take control of your diabetes?
