Pregnancy should be an exciting time in a woman’s life, and very often it is. However, whether a pregnancy is planned and wanted or a surprise, it can be a rollercoaster of emotions.  There may be anxieties regarding the baby, money worries, fear of labour, just to name a few.  All these stresses can build up and weigh on a mother’s (and a father’s) mind.  This can then manifest in physical symptoms such as insomnia, headaches, high blood pressure and appetite fluctuations.  This then becomes a vicious circle, as you worry about your physical symptoms your stress level increase, which leads to an intensification of your symptoms.

Hormonal fluctuations, particularly in early pregnancy, can lead to morning sickness.  This can range from mild nausea to debilitating sickness (Hyperemesis Gravidarum).  Then, in turn, you begin to feel fatigued and dehydration sets in which can be dangerous and may lead to hospitalisation.  There are remedies that will help to alleviate morning sickness and allow you to get back to your day to day activities:

  • Cocculus Indica – For nausea that begins as soon as you lift your head from the pillow. Cannot stand the sight or smell of food.  Accompanying fatigue and tiredness.
  • Ipecac – For nausea that is not relieved by vomiting. Profuse salivation.
  • Pulsatilla – For nausea which is worse in a warm room. Not thirsty and can tend to be weepy and emotional.
  • Sepia – Cannot stand the sight or smell of food. Craving pickles and sour foods as well as sweets.  Tired, however, you feel better after some exercise or activity.

This is just a small sample of the more common remedies.

Homeopathy is also on hand to support your baby’s development in the womb.  At each stage, your baby requires different minerals to develop healthy bones, skin, teeth etc.  The baby will get exactly what it needs from his or her mother, however, this can risk leaving her deficient in certain minerals.  To counteract this and make sure that both mother and baby have exactly what they need through pregnancy up to birth there is a specialised protocol of tissue salts to take throughout. The protocol is as follows:

  • Months 2 and 6: Calc Fluor, Mag Phos & Ferrum Phos
  • Months 3 and 7: Calc Fluor, Mag Phos & Nat Mur
  • Months 4 and 8: Calc Fluor, Nat Mur & Silica
  • Months 5 and 9: Calc Fluor, Ferrum Phos & Silica

Calc Flour is important for development of bone and connective tissue.  It can also help to prevent and reduce stretch marks.

Mag Phos can help with those pesky pregnancy cramps.

Ferrum Phos increases the oxygenation of the blood and can naturally keep your iron levels healthy.  This reduces the need for iron tablets which can lead to constipation.

Natrum Mur helps maintain a healthy water balance in the body.  This, in turn, will maintain healthy blood pressure.  It will also reduce water retention.

Silica is found in hair, teeth, nails and skin and is a vital building block for your baby.

There are many ways to help manage your stress levels during pregnancy.  It can help to talk to someone to work out what is making you feel this way, be it your spouse, a friend or family member or your homeopath.  Once you have identified the cause of these emotions you can begin to address them.  This can be done with your constitutional remedy or perhaps a more specific remedy to the symptoms you are experiencing.

There are other methods that you can employ on a day to day basis to help keep anxiety at bay.

  • Meditation can help to still an anxious mind. If you are new to this it can take a little practice.  There are numerous apps you can download or YouTube videos you can follow for guided meditations.  Start with short blocks of time and work up.
  • Become aware of your breathing. If you find yourself taking short, ragged breaths try to take control of your breath.  Breathe deeply and consciously.  You will be amazed how something so simple will help you feel calmer.
  • Experience the outdoors. A short walk in nature has been proven to reduce stress levels.  You are killing two birds with one stone and getting some gentle exercise also.  This will help prepare your body for labour.

Hopefully, there has been some useful information in this post for you to take away and work with.  If you are unsure about using remedies yourself, seek out a qualified homeopath who can help you with whatever issues you are experiencing.
